Luxury camping trip in Botswana

Botswana is a low volume, high price destination. It is not cheap, but it is worth it!

Besides the popular fly-in safaris, Botswana also offers self-drivers a chance to experience Botswana in a way that most other countries cannot. A self-drive trip is truly the way to experience Africa’s wildlife. As the wildlife areas of Botswana are not fenced, you are able to camp in designated campsites which afford you the opportunity to have the wildlife come right up to your tent or vehicle.

Should you not be that adventurous, join a scheduled or tailor-made private overland tour where you will be part of a small number of similar minded companions for the duration. These trips range from budget to luxury and fully participative to “put-your-feet-up-and-relax”. These trips are guided by experts with lots of local knowledge. Accommodation ranges from dome tents (matresses and sleeping bags) to mini meru tents or luxury tents (comfortable camp beds with good matresses and fine linen).

The Botswana people are friendly and for the most part, quite well-educated. They are not prone to violent crime, but as is the case with most African countries, the general population is poor and petty theft is a problem. At the lodges, that for the most part are remote, this does not seem to be a problem at all.

Safari vehicle’s with roof-top tents are available for rental in Kasane and Maun for the intrepid traveller. They are a little pricey, but as you will not have to pay the high price for lodge accommodation, it suits travellers on a budget.
